Nature Show - Video Project

You are now a producer on the Discovery Channel, and it is your job to create a nature documentary. Fortunately you only need to produce a 70-second documentary, not a typical 30-minute version.

You must select a nature topic regarding something with which you are familiar. The topic could be some type of an animal (your pet dog, cat, fish, or turtle), or a flower or tree or types of clouds. Use something that you know a lot about, or do a little research so that you can give us a little trivia about your topic. If you are really stumped, ask someone like Mr. Cox about plants or trees in the area that you could videotape and explain about.

Shots - Your project must use all the camera shots listed below. Take as many closeup shots as possible.

1

Long Shot (probably used at the start of your project while you're introducing the topic)

1

Medium Shot - keep the shots smooth - use a tripod if possible

2

Closeup (at least two, you will probably have more)

2

Tracking Shot - You must have one shot that tracks around your subject. Just slowly circle your camera around the subject. You may hand-hold the camera if necessary, but do it slowly and carefully.

5

Narration & Subtitles - Your video must have some kind of narration, either a voiceover or titles that appear on the bottom. The voiceover or subtitles do not have to run the whole time, but you must have at least five pieces of information or trivia that you provide in your documentary (This is the German Shepherd. Their characteristics are . . . They like to eat . . . or This is a ficus bush. It's leaves are usually like this . . . It usually grows here . . . The bark looks like this . . .) Bonus points for using voiceover instead of titles.

1

Length - Your video must be exactly 70 seconds long, including all titles. You may only run overtime if you have a particularly interesting sequence and request permission.

3

Music - Find some suitable documentary music - some soothing instrumental music in the background that will not be so noticeable.

1

Title Graphic - You must have a title graphic at the start, and then subtitles giving information about your subject. Use a lot of subtitles if you don't want to do voiceovers throughout the whole project.

2

Credits - Fade out at the end and have a 6-second title saying (color text as large as possible in a display font):
